June 29-30 Irkutsk

Following the tradition, we stayed in a nice hotel to spend most of the time washing clothes, processing photos and updating the blog. Unlike the Hilton in Krasnoyarsk, Marriott in Irkutsk does not have a guest laundry with a washing machine and a drier, so I had to wash everything by hand yet again… And Pablo was processing hundreds of photos he took in Olkhon.

Irkutsk is the starting point for travellers to Baikal, so it is full of foreigners whom we seen in the hotel and in the streets. That really reminded me of Saint Petersburg. The city itself has a lot of Baroque architecture and is quite beautiful. It is a pity that quite a few of those grand buildings look quite dilapidated. There is a street of wooden houses that represent traditional Russian wooden architecture and are a main tourist attraction of Irkutsk full of restaurants and souvenir shops.

Saturday evening we witnessed another quite violent thunderstorm. It was going around Irkutsk, but we could still see the multiple lightnings going on for more than 30 minutes. On Sunday, as we went for a walk, we could see more lightnings in the distance, but the rain passed around Irkutsk again. Hence, we needed to take our car to the carwash to get rid of all the mud and dirt we collected for the past month since Aktash. After the wash, the car was beyond recognisable.
