June 11 Cheryomushki and Sayano-Shushenskaya hydropower station

This morning we moved yet again. This time to a town called Cheryomushki - the "dead-end" town in the mountains as one person called it. It hosts the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydropower station on the Yenisei River and the Shushensky Bor national park.

The hydropower station is not available for visits. Instead, we were able to join a group of students for a visit to its museum. There was a 3D video of the dam, which was quite interesting to see. They also talked about the major accident in 2009, which took lives of 75 people (more on Wikipedia). Then we went to take the pictures of the dam itself.

We finished the day by visiting Djoyskaya Sosnovka - a bay, where all cut wood from the time when the dam was built is "stored". As the works were done in very much haste, the wood was just simply wasted and is no longer useable creating a huge graveyard of dead trees. This bay is also a starting point to go up the Yenisei River, which is now cut by the dam.

Our lodging for the two following nights was in the Shushensky Bor national park. The place had no internet connection, so we were not able to update our blog and are now very much delayed. On the other hand, it had a kitchen, so I did some basic cooking while Pablo was working on the latest photos.
